9-11 fund for same sex partners
Hello. I am writing to you as a disappointed citizen, graduate social work
student, and social worker who advocates for the rights of others daily. I
am very saddened that our brothers and sisters who passed on 9-11 will not
be given the same respect and gratitude as their heterosexual counterparts.
Feinberg may claim that he is following local law and that the fund will be
in existence for such a short amount of time that it is not reasonable to
challenge individual states' biased practice, but I believe this to be
defeatist and a weak argument. Change comes from brave groups and
individuals standing up and changing their practice to reflect what is
right, not what is easy. The current practice of various states may be to
discriminate against same sex couples, but that does not mean that it is
sensible or right. It means that those states are lead by men and women who
have not yet been enlightened to the detrimental practice of heterosexism.
Take some initiative and honor our same sex heroes and their partners. It
may be uncomfortable but change, even for the better, is uncomfortable.
Please do what is right. Thank you for your program and dedication.
